The Effects of COVID-19

June 29, 2020

We are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and things are constantly changing and evolving, including the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility. The health and safety of our employees, guests, Community Members, neighbors, and the public is our top concern. We are taking a vigilant approach while information about COVID-19 continues to develop. In recent days, we have implemented a number or precautions to ensure the health and safety of all those who visit or work at the facility.

When the pandemic started, we received a lot of questions about how COVID-19 would affect the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility. While the situation continues to evolve, there is no question that our facility—like so many others—has had to adapt and change our operating procedures with each new development.

What has changed?

We are no longer accepting organics sourced from restrooms, and personal protective equipment is required for load inspections of incoming material. There has also been a reduction in incoming food waste since schools have not been in session and restaurants are operating at a reduced capacity. We have also implemented changes inside of our facility, including Plexiglas barriers in the scale house.

What is open and available for customers?

Commercial and residential customers are still able to purchase products from the facility, including compost and mulch. We have installed Plexiglas barriers to allow safe transactions and to protect our customers and staff.

We have also resumed the intake of materials (e.g., food waste, yard waste, etc.), from residential and commercial customers.

The SMSC Organics Recycling Facility is now open Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm. Rest assured we are taking several precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all our guests and staff members.

Stay healthy, be safe, and take care of yourself. We hope to see you soon!
