BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND—FREE YARD WASTE AND PUMPKIN DROP-OFF PROGRAMS RETURN!

September 28, 2021

It’s that time of year again! Crunch… crunch… crunch… the sound of the leaves under your feet means fall is here. It can be a lot of work to clean up your yard, but it’s easier if you have a plan—and we can help! Get rid of your yard waste, for FREE, at the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility during our fall yard waste drop-off program. Running every Sunday in September and October from 8am-2pm, all Scott County residents and SMSC employees/team members are welcome to participate. Just bring your ID or badge when you drop off—and take advantage of the long-awaited return of this program while you can!

Accepted items:

  • Brush
  • Leaves
  • Sticks
  • Logs
  • Stumps
  • Grass clippings
  • Plants and pumpkins
  • Flowers
  • Shrubs
  • Old mulch
  • Hay bales

Fast-forward to the end of October, and the big question is… what do pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns have in common? They are both accepted for recycling at the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility—for FREE—November 1-12. (Are you sensing a pattern here?)

After the candy has been eaten and the skeletons are back in the closet, it is time to clean up the Halloween decorations. After receiving comments from area residents, the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility is excited to announce that the free pumpkin recycling program is back—and open to the public. The program allows anyone to drop off old pumpkins—free of charge—and runs from November 1-12 during the facility’s normal business hours, Monday through Saturday. Be sure to remove any decoration or candles as these items are not compostable.

So, what exactly happens to your old yard waste and pumpkins after you drop them off? They get recycled! What would otherwise be tossed into landfills becomes nutrient-rich, natural compost, compost blends, and mulch that can be used for gardening, farming, landscaping, and more. Simply put, your old yard waste will be made into something new that can be used in the spring to help things grow and look beautiful. These free programs are fantastic opportunities to get rid of your yard waste before the first snowflakes arrive! Thank you for thinking about the planet by disposing your yard waste in an eco-friendly way—hope to see you at the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility soon!
